It is important to follow the instructions for maintenance of your floor. This will prolong the life of the floor and in the case of oiled floors, can even remove the need for re-sanding later.
More damage can be done by maintaining a wooden floor than by neglecting it.
Overwashing, using inapppropriate cleaners, flood mopping and worse can damage the protective oil or lacquer. This will allow moisture and dirt to penetrate the grain and in extreme cases the floor itself will be damaged.
When using water based cleaners, put them in a spray bottle and apply to the floor in a fine mist avoiding over wetting.
The idea is to break up any soiling then remove it on a mop or buffer.
Vacuuming is an invaluable form of cleaning. The fine grit that is on the soles of your shoes and blows in from the street will act like sandpaper on the protective layer.
Friction is a good way to polish a floor. Buffing oiled floors revives them and gives them that unique lustre.
